VeneersDo you have stained or damaged teeth? Do you want to rejuvenate your Hollywood smile back to its glamour days?

Your dentists in Wheaton, IL, Drs. David Carlson and Michael Schuiling, know patients want to have better-looking smiles, so they provide an economical solution: veneers.

More About Veneers

Veneers are an aesthetic fix for unsightly teeth. They are made of thin porcelain and are used to resurface an individual's teeth, especially if they're damaged. They fix a variety of issues, such as:

  • Stained or discolored teeth, usually as a result of:
    • Drinking coffee or tea
    • Poor hygiene
    • Smoking
    • Chewing tobacco
    • Tetracycline-containing medicine
  • Crooked, misshapen, or overcrowded teeth
  • Teeth that have been damaged in an accident

More About the Procedure

When you come into the Wheaton office for your new veneers, your doctor will:

  1. Examine your teeth and assess whether veneers are right for you. If they decide that you are a good candidate, they'll first deal with any underlying issues, such as cavities.
  2. Your dentist will then take an impression of your teeth and send it to a lab where a custom set of veneers matching the color of your teeth will be made for you.
  3. They'll remove some enamel from the surface of your teeth and cement the veneers (your dentist removes this enamel) so that you don't feel like your teeth are protruding.

Caring for Veneers

In order to take proper care of your veneers, you need to:

  • Brush twice a day while holding your brush at a 40-degree angle
  • Change your toothbrush when it's frayed
  • Use fluoride-containing toothpaste, mouthwash, and water
  • Eat healthy food like carrots that scrape teeth clean
  • Floss at least once before bed

Your Cosmetic Dentistry Options in Wheaton, IL

  • Teeth Whitening: Teeth whitening can quickly and effectively help give your smile a boost and help improve the appearance of your teeth. The whitening session takes only about an hour. You can go right back to your daily activities after your whitening treatment.
  • Porcelain Veneers: Veneers cover the tooth to change its appearance. Veneers can change the shape, size, length, width, or color of a tooth and are especially successful in providing total smile makeovers to patients with serious cosmetic issues with their teeth.
  • Dentures: Dentures replace all or most of the teeth on an arch. Full dentures replace all the teeth on an arch, partial dentures replace most of the teeth on an arch, and implant-supported dentures use dental implant technology to anchor into place in the mouth.
  • Invisalign: Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment which straightens the teeth and corrects bite issues using a different method than traditional braces. While traditional braces use non-removable metal brackets and wires to move the teeth, Invisalign uses clear plastic aligner trays. Patients remove the trays to clean their teeth and eat, allowing for superior ease of use and effective results.
  • Dental Implants: Dental implants permanently replace a missing tooth by surgically placing a replacement root and tooth. The implant sits in the jawbone, which grows around it to anchor it into place. Implants stand alone and do not require the surrounding teeth to stay in place, making them one of the best options for teeth replacement.
  • Bonding: Dental bonding uses composite resin materials molded directly onto the teeth to change their appearance. This procedure takes just minutes and can subtly change a tooth to fit better into your smile.

Make sure your dental veneers last as long as possible by properly caring for them.veneers

Dental veneers are transforming smiles all over Wheaton, IL, and you could be next. This amazing cosmetic treatment offered by our dentists Dr. David Carlson and Dr. Michael Schuiling is a fast, painless and effective way to get that perfect smile. Of course, once you finally get your new restorations you’ll want to do whatever you possibly can to ensure that they last. Here are some tips on how to care for your new porcelain veneers.

Keep Your New Teeth Clean

It’s just as important for you to maintain good oral hygiene once you have your veneers as it was before you got them. This means making sure that you brush your teeth twice a day and floss daily to prevent the buildup of plaque and tartar, the leading causes of gum disease and decay. If you don’t give your teeth the proper care they deserve you could end up dealing with problems down the road, which could greatly impact not just the health of your teeth but also your veneers.

Use the Right Tools for the Job

While most people assume that all toothpastes are created equally it’s important to note that some toothpastes may contain ingredients that are too harsh for your porcelain veneers. Avoid whitening toothpastes or toothpastes that contain abrasive ingredients like baking soda or hydrogen peroxide, which can wear away at your new restorations. Also, make sure to always use a soft-bristled toothbrush every time you brush to avoid excessive wear and tear.

Don’t Use Your Teeth as Tools

If you are someone who immediately uses their teeth to tear open plastic packaging then this is a habit you better cut out if you want to maintain your dental veneers. Your teeth should only be used for chewing food. If you use them as tools you risk breaking, fracturing or pulling them off.

Stop Teeth Grinding

Are you someone who grinds their teeth at night? If so, then you could risk damaging your veneers or affecting their lifespan. To combat this, our Wheaton, IL, general dentist can make a custom nightguard for you to wear over your teeth when you sleep to prevent excessive wear and tear on your new smile.

Get Routine Dental Checkups

Even though your veneers themselves cannot develop decay they are still prone to damage. We will also want to check to make sure that your oral health is up to par and that if decay or gum disease is present that it’s treated as soon as possible to prevent more serious complications. We can also check the health and integrity of the veneers whenever you come in.

Do you have questions about caring for your veneers? Are you interested in getting dental veneers in Wheaton, IL? If so, then don’t hesitate to pick up the phone and gives us a call. We are here to help you get the beautiful smile you’ve always wanted.

VivicasVeneerstheMakingofaHollywoodSmile

What's an actor's most important feature? According to Vivica A. Fox, whose most recent big-screen role was in Independence Day: Resurgence, it's what you see right up front.

"On screen, your smile and your eyes are the most inviting things that bring the audience in" she said. "Especially if you play the hot chick."

But like lots of people, Vivica reached a point where she felt her smile needed a little help in order to look its best. That's when she turned to a popular cosmetic dental treatment.

"I got veneers years ago," Ms. Fox told Dear Doctor magazine in a recent interview, "just because I had some gapping that probably only I noticed."

What exactly are dental veneers? Essentially, they are thin shells of lustrous porcelain that are permanently attached to the front surfaces of the teeth. Tough, lifelike and stain-resistant, they can cover up a number of defects in your smile — including stains, chips, cracks, and even minor spacing irregularities like the ones Vivica had.

Veneers have become the treatment of choice for Hollywood celebs — and lots of regular folks too — for many reasons. Unlike some treatments that can take many months, it takes just a few appointments to have veneers placed on your teeth. Because they are custom made just for you, they allow you to decide how bright you want your smile to be: anywhere from a natural pearly hue to a brilliant "Hollywood white." Best of all, they are easy to maintain, and can last for many years with only routine care.

To place traditional veneers, it's necessary to prepare the tooth by removing a small amount (a millimeter or two) of its enamel surface. This keeps it from feeling too big — but it also means the treatment can't be reversed, so once you get veneers, you'll always have them. In certain situations, "no-prep" or minimal-prep veneers, which require little or no removal of tooth enamel, may be an option for some people.

Veneers aren't the only way to create a better smile: Teeth whitening, crowns or orthodontic work may also be an alternative. But for many, veneers are the preferred option. What does Vivica think of hers?

"I love my veneers!" she declared, noting that they have held up well for over a decade.

Have you been thinking about improving the way your teeth look but aren't sure which cosmetic dentistry option is the best choice for you? veneersVeneers offer the ideal solution for many cosmetic issues. Wheaton, IL, cosmetic dentists Dr. David Carlson and Dr. Michael Schuiling discuss the restorations and explains what types of dental issues can be improved with veneers.

What are veneers?

Veneers cover flaws in the fronts of your teeth with a thin layer of porcelain. Before you receive your veneers, we'll make an impression of your smile in our Wheaton office, then send it to a dental laboratory. The lab technicians use the impression to create veneers that fit your teeth perfectly. The veneer process often involves removing a very small amount of tooth enamel to ensure a comfortable fit, although this step may not be necessary in some cases.

When your new veneers are ready, we'll use water or glycerin to temporarily position them on your teeth. After a few minor adjustments, they'll be cemented to your teeth, completing your smile transformation.

Why should I choose veneers?

Veneers are versatile, comfortable, attractive and long-lasting. Other types of restorations, such as dental crowns, require substantial changes to your tooth structure, but not veneers. Caring for veneers is very quick and easy. Simply brush with a non-abrasive toothpaste and floss regularly. Veneers may be a good choice if you have:

  • Minor Damage: Do you have small chips or cracks in your tooth enamel? These unsightly flaws can be easily concealed with the application of veneers.
  • Uneven Surfaces: Concealing bumps or pits that make your tooth surface uneven is simple, thanks to veneers.
  • Gaps: Slight spaces between your teeth aren't uncommon. Luckily, they're easy to hide by adding a few veneers.
  • Shorter-Than-Normal Teeth: Grinding your teeth at night can eventually reduce their height, sometimes very noticeably. Adding veneers will lengthen them. After you receive your veneers, you'll want to wear a nightguard to prevent damage caused by your grinding.
  • A Dull or Discolored Smile: Has one of your teeth turned an unattractive grey or brown shade? Discolorations can be caused by childhood tetracycline use or may be a result of a dental procedure. No matter what the cause, a veneer that matches the shade of surrounding teeth offers a simple solution. Veneers can also be used to whiten and brighten your entire smile.
